|

Every place on the planet has something of interest, but Peru is undoubtedly a privilege country for its great natural, cultural and human legacy.
Here, nature lovers will feel gratified by the diversity of environments and scenery. They will be amazed by the sharp contrast between forests and deserts on the coast; deep ravines and towering snow-capped mountains in the Andean highlands; densely forested slopes and huge plains of thick vegetation in the Amazon jungle; and they will be surprised at the wide variety of flora and fauna, unique in the world, that are characteristic to each of these regions.
Those who admire the remains if the past will find magnificent testimonies to an ancient civilization that dates back six thousand years, with an unmistakable cultural identity that created wonders such as the Royal Tombs of Sipan, the Nazca Lines, Chan Chan and Machu Picchu. And they will be able to see the best examples -in painting, sculpture and architecture - of the fusion of Hispanic and American cultures.
Adventure travelers will be able to ride tall waves and go looking for underwater life on the long stretches of natural beaches; climb high mountain rangers, explore deep caves, run the longest and biggest rivers on the continent, trek along ancient paths that wind through different eco-systems; and observe endangered species up close in natural reserves of indescribable beauty.
Because it is a racial melting pot, the country is home to multiple expressions of its peoples through their ancient, creative and colorful folk art. Visitors can join in age-old celebrations, each music and dance retelling its own history. They are welcome to share in the customs and tasks of villagers and witness how farmers have been able to masters the difficult terrain of the coast, highlands and jungle.
There also will be no lack of opportunities for the most demanding of palates to savor the variety and quality of Peruvian cuisine, which offers the visitor the best combination of flavors in the Americas |

The city of Cusco is located in the southeastern Andes. Its name in Qechua means "center of the world", when it was the capital of the empire or Tahuantinsuyo (four regions). Legend has it that the city was founded by Manco Capca and Mama Occlo, who rose out of Lake Titicaca.
The architectural legendary of Cusco dates back to the 15th century and is attributed to the Inca Pachacuteq (1438 - 1471), who built the city's most remarkable constructions, including fine stone carving and perfect locking between stone blocks and the trapezoidal design of entryways. These buildings include Sacsayhuaman, in the upper part of the city; the Koricancha (temple of the sun) on top of which the Spanish built the Santo Domingo convent; and on the street called Hatun Rumiyoc (two blocks from the main square), the wall that includes the famous12-sides stone.
Following the arrival of the Spaniards, Cusco became a mestizo and colonial city featuring splendid colonial constructions, built on top of Inca foundations, and which developed its own mestizo style of architecture and painting that can be seen in the Cathedral and the Compañia de Jesus church.
The city is know as the Archaeological Capital of the Americas, UNESCO declared Cusco a World Heritage Site in 1983.
The Sacred Valley includes the remarkable archeological areas of Pisaq and Ollantaytambo. Also the Inca Market in Pisac.
The archaeological complex of Choquequirao is 185 km (114 miles) from Cusco, with a main square, storage buildings, terracing systems and ceremonial platforms.

City Tour and Santa Catalina (half time) This takes you to the valley of Chillca for majestic views of the city, surrounding volcanic mountains and terracing. Then yo u return to the city center and the magnificent Cathedral before concluding with the Santa Catalina monastery.
Our tour will start in the town of Carmen Alto. From its Mirador (lookout point) we will appreciate the three imposing volcanoes which surround Arequipa, Misti (5,825 m), Chachani (6,075) and Pichu Pichu (5,325 m), as well as the impressive landscape and terraces. Later on we shall go to visit the traditional and colonial town of Yanahuara, its main plaza, church, cloisters and typical houses with narrow streets, built with the white volcanic stone called "sillar", reason why Arequipa is known as the "White City". Further on we will get to the oldest part of the city (Historic downtown) which was declared by UNESCO as Cultural Heritage of Humanity. You will visit the Plaza de Armas (Main Square), surrounded by three portals made of granite stone and vaults of brick, and the fountain made with three bronze plates and in its top the figure of a soldier of the XVI century, called "Tuturutu". Then we shall visit the Basilica Catedral (year 1656), considered one of the first neoclassic religious monuments, damaged by a fire in 1844 and rebuilt in 1868. It is 107 m long and it is decorated with 70 columns in classic style, two big towers and two bronze medallions. Inside there are many religious works and paintings. The main altar is in Italian marble from Carrara. The Pulpit sculptured in cedar wood by a famous French carver Paul Renaul, made in France, and the pipe organ made in Belgium in the XVII century. After that we will go to the Convent of La Compañía de Jesús, built by the Jesuits, the most beautiful expression of the religious architecture with its church (1573). the polychrome Chapel of Saint Ignacio de Loyola as well as the cloisters with decorated arches in sillar, the typical white volcanic stone, the vaulted walls and columns in exuberant baroque and the altars covered in gold leaf. Juanita-the beautiful Ice Maiden Juanita is the name given to the mummified body of an Inca sacrificial victim found on the volcano Ampato (6,380m) in 1995 by Johan Reinhardt. This 500 year old body is now preserved in the Catholic University of Arequipa. Scientific research is revealing details of life in Inca times trough analysis of the wonderfully preserved corpse and accompanying material goods. The results tell a captivating tale of the last days of her life as well as detailing the diet and diseases of Inca time . a visit to see Juanita can be added to most itinerates in Arequipa.
Momia Juanita (Spanish for "Mummy Juanita" or better known in English as "The Ice Maiden") is a 15th century Inca mummy of a 12 to 14 year old girl who died around 1440 and 1450. She was discovered in southern Peru in 1995 by anthropologist Johann Ole Reinhard and his Peruvian climbing partner Miguel Zarate. Also known as the Lady of Ampato and The Frozen Lady, Juanita the "Ice Maiden" toured the United States in 1996 and Japan in 1999 before returning to Peru. The mummy was remarkably well-preserved throughout five centuries, making her one of the more important mummy finds in recent years. When found in Mount Ampato (part of the Andes cordillera), the mummy weighed, according to Reinhard, approximately 80 lbs. Reinhard and his partner then came to the realization that due to the heavy body mass, the mummy's flesh must have been frozen. This was an extrodinary discovery because it allowed biological tests to be run on the lung, liver, and muscle tissue, revealing new insights on Inca health and nutrition during the reign of Sapa Inca Pachacuti Inca Yupanqui.
The discovery of Juanita
Johann Reinhard had made various ascents in several mountain ranges like the Himalayas (in Nepal) and the Peruvian Andes. As an archaeologist, he had studied Machu Picchu, Chavin and the Nazca Lines. He became very familiar with the Peruvian heights and the nature of the country's native inhabitants. For him and his parter, Miguel Zarate, a guide from Arequipa, it became a regular routine to climb the Apus, (the mountain gods in Inca mythology).
In 1995, during an ascent of Mt. Ampato, Reinhard and Zarate surprisingly found inside the summit crater a bundle that had fallen down from an Inca site when the ride had collapsed due to the melting caused by volcanic ash that has fallen from the nearby erupting volcano of Sabancaya. To their astonishment the bundle turned out to contain a remarkably well-preserved mummy of a young girl. In addition, they found--strewn about the mountain slope down which the mummy had fallen--many items that had been left as offerings to the Inca gods, such as statues and food items. A couple of days later, the mummy and the objects were taken to Arequipa; the remains of the mummy were initially kept in a special refrigerator.
In 1995, before Reinhard and Zarate left on their journey, they had a traditional maize beer offering to the gods wishing for a safe and successful journey. |

9:00 a.m
Departure from town to the Province of Castilla (Majes Valley). North-West of Arequipa. 163 km (2 hrs)
11:00 a.m
Arrival to Majes Valley, then we take a detour and cross the bridge towards Corire. We enter to the site where are located the petroglyphs or rupestrian carvings of Toro Muerto, the most remarkable centre of rock engravings in the world. It is located in the Majes Valley, at 400 - 800 meters above sea level, considered one of the most fertile and important valleys of Arequipa. Toro Muerto was discovered in 1951 by a team of archeologists from Universidad San Agustín. It has an extension of more than 5 Km2 and spreaded there are approximately 5000 huge stone blocks of magma or volcanic lava engraved with different figures. Its antiquity goes back to the beginning of our age (1200 years). According to Carbon-14 Tests, the engravings are 11 centuries old, that is to say between 700 to 800 AD. The sculpted stone material is igninbrite or rhyolitic tufa, the product of a volcanic eruption that may well have been either the Chachani or Coropuna volcanoes and that could have happened during the Tertiary Era. The topics of the paintings include thousand of anthropomorphous characters (dancers, musicians, shepherds, hunters, realistic and semirealistic figures), animals (jaguars, condors, smakes, eagles, camels, fishes), phytomorphous, geometrical symbols and even incomplete shapes, in process of elaboration, all of them engraved by different cultures, the Wari and Collahua, whose message and interpretation continue to be a mistery. After visiting the petroglyphs we shall visit Querullpa where, after a 20 minute walk, we would appreciate dinosaur foot prints. This place contains nearly 68 foot prints measuring between 50 and 90 cms in lenght. The age of these foot prints is about 150 million years and they correspond to the Jurasic and Cretaceus periods. These foot prints were discovered in 2002. Studies from Bristol University, England, mention that these foot prints would be the oldests found in South America. About 50 million years older than the ones found in Argentina, Chile and Bolivia. Some of the foot prints of 50 and 30 cm would have 4 fingers, 3 of them joined by membranes and the other one was free, shorter and backward. The magnitude and depth of these foot prints give an idea that these animals were about 3.5 m high and 15 m long from head to tail. There are also some other paleontologycal evidences in the area such us marine and plant fossils that show that this place was, at some time, an ocean floor

Temple of Fertility/Juliaca/Pomata (one day) This full day combines a visit to the Inca remains of Chucuito and nearby rock art, with the museum of colonial paintings in Juliaca and the San Santiago Church of Pomata. There are also beautiful Churches in Juliaca to see.
On a small promontory on the southern shore of Lake Titicaca, Chucuito, a small Aymara town, is one of the oldest in the altiplano region. The town, capital of the province during colonial times, has a lovely main square and a colonial church, Nuestra Señora de La Asunción (built in 1601). Chucuito was also the primary Inca settlement in the region. Near another colonial church, Santo Domino, is a most curious construction dating to pre-Columbian times and the town's main attraction: Inca Uyo is composed of dozens of large, mushroom-shaped phallic stones, most a few feet high, which were apparently erected as part of fertility rituals. The anatomically correct stones, which until a few years ago were kept in a sterile museum, leave little doubt as to what their creators were getting at. Some point up at the sun god, Inti, while others are inserted into the ground, directed at Pachamama, or Mother Earth. At the center of the ring, lording over the fertility temple, is the king phallus. Local guides tell tales of the exact rituals during which virgins purportedly sat for hours atop the phalluses to increase fertility. The stones might predate the Incas, but some contend that they are fake. Spanish missionaries did everything in their power to destroy all symbols and structures they considered pagan, and it does seem odd that they would have constructed two churches nearby but left this temple intact. |

One releases tie tradition with the desert and agriculture surrounds to the city of Ica, capital of the department of the same name. From the Virreinato, Ica became important an inside vitivinícola one. It counts the tradition that, to few years of the Spanish conquest, seeded in these sunny earth stocks brought from the Canary islands whose surprised adaptation all. With these under it was only managed to produce an excellent wine, but that taste of such Spanish and that continues conquering to all those that they prove it. But the creativity iqueña also gave origin to a new product: the cachina, a licor prepared with the must of the fermented, very popular grape in the local celebrations.
Besides to prove its drinks, Ica invites to us to taste great variety of plates prepared on the basis of pallares, and delicious candies as fréjol strained and the roofing tiles, that is to say, stuffed pacanas, lemons or higos with manjar white and covers with a sugar bath.
The intense winds that raise sand clouds, calls locally paraca, have formed singular dunes and place setting of sand the famous Pampas of Ica, that jealously keep the mysteries from old regional cultures. In spite of the water shortage, their inhabitants reached an admirable agricultural development, thanks to the design of complex channels of irrigation that take advantage of the filtrations underground water.

Absolut Travel do not currently offer walking expeditions from this regional city but the scope and depth of the places to visit is absolutely scintillating, especially if you are fascinated by ancient civilizations. Everyone has heard of the Inca but the history of Peruvia n civilizations is a long and complex one going back al least 5000 years. Most of us will have heard of the Nazca lines and may have some vague ideas of the culture that was behind them. But here in the north of Peru around the same time as the Nazca flourished the civilization know as the Moche, whose pottery is world famous for its sexually explicit pieces. In addition, there are extensive remains and museums associated with the Lambayeque and Chimu periods of Peruvian culture that preceded the establishment of the Inca Empire.
Although, all three of these were in contact with far distant places, none had an empire the size of the Inca. But they were vibrant societies with skilled artisans who produced stunning artifacts in textiles, metals and pottery. Their architects have left a huge legacy in ceremonial buildings and tombs, which have survived over 1000 years of wear and tear despite being made of mud bricks. Like most major early civilizations worldwide these were founded upon an ability to use water to produce food and raw materials. Evidence of this can de found in the Chicama valley where there still stands a major Moche aqueduct.
In addition to the archaeology, Trujillo boasts pleasant Colonial architecture, fantastic restaurants and a major leatherworking industry and market. You can buy beautifully crafted leather products at a fraction of their worth al home or even in Lima. The climate is very agreeable year round. The flight from Lima takes less than an hour, or alternatively, you could opt for a coach journey up the Pan Americana highway. This is
Well worth doing in one direction as the coast is splendidly rugged and wild. As you pass between the greenery of irrigated valleys you will come to fully appreciate the importance of water management to human history and how the people of Peru played an important part in this development and in the process domesticated so many foods that we now use all over the world (potatoes, corn, squash, tomatoes, aborigines, etc).
Trujillo was another major Inca administrative centre but is better know for the fantastic remains from previous epochs. The city is the location of the major ceremonial complexes associated with the Moche period during the first millennium AD. These are in the form of two enormous adobe pyramids known as the temples of the Sun and the Moon, where many human sacrificial victims have been excavated during the last ten years. The Moche civilization was followed by the Chimu period. The capital of Chimu is at Chan Chan just outside Trujillo, adjoining the coast. This is an enormous site that contains different towns built by successive rulers. We recommend that you also visit the beach resort of Huanchaca near by to Chan Chan, where seafood lovers can eat fabulously fresh dishes caught by hand on reed boats.
In the next valley going north (Chicama) lies the burial and ritual complex of El Brujo. In Spanish the term means the warlock or sorcerer and it is no coincidence that local shamans still carry out ceremonies at the site. Here are two Moche pyramids and one from the time of Chavin (see Huaraz extensions and excursions). The remarkable conditions of preservation have yielded wonderful textiles from both periods at this site, which is more remarkable due to the fact that the site abuts the ocean. Burials have been made at El Brujo for thousands of years and suggest long term continuity in land use for this site. There is an ongoing excavation al El Brujo that has uncovered exceptional murals and carvings on areas of a pyramid that formed a major ritual complex. Here, there is also the chance to get down to the Pacific Ocean in a tranquil, spiritual setting.
The visits to Chiclayo being further north again use a short flight from Trujillo airport. In this northernmost area oh Peru’s great civilizations we find the Lambayeque valley and the tomb of the Lord of Sipan. This Tutunkamun of the Americas was only discovered in 1987. The period overlaps with Moche and again has huge very slanted eyes. Legend tells that the Lambayeque god of the “flying eyes” arrived by canoe to these shores. However, to date no firm archaeological connections with Asia at this time have been made, though there are claims that some of the textile designs are in fact Japanese…..
The following are the options we currently offer for visits to Trujillo and you should contact us for full details. There are lots of other potential destinations in the north, including major centers that are more difficult to get to i.e. in the jungle. So if there is anything else you want to do just ask and we will oblige if it’s feasible.
