Huchuy Qosco Trek.

2 days/ 1 night
Grading: Moderate 2

This trek starts at Q’enqo ( 14Km from Cusco) and crosses the high pampa before arriving at the retreat of the Inca. Literally “little Cusco”, this is one of the most remarkable of the region’s Inca sites, yet one of the least visited. It is small private town with religious/ritual complexes that sits high above the sacred valley, guarded by its very inaccessibility. It comes complete with its own grain silos, watchtowers and royal tombs. However, the first day provides guided access to a terrific range of Andean birds e.g. Eagle, Falcon, Andean Goose, Woodpeckers, CaraCara and then some. Furthermore, you will also walk Inca trail that descends deep chasms observed by Inca way-stations, and all in 2 days!

Day 1: Cusco – Laguna Q’oricocha
After breakfast at your hotel, we transport you the short drive to Q’enqo . There follows a moderate ascent of 500 metres to our highest point of 4,200mts. On the way we pass by water collection channels for the shrine and observe woodpeckers who live in the ground. After seeing many other Andean species at close quarters we reach the lake Q’oricocha (4100mts). This high pampa can be deceptively cold both during the day and night. Therefore, adequate warm clothing is a pre-requisite. Stop for Lunch.

In the afternoon we continue our crossing of the high pampa before descending to the village of Qenchi. A rewarding ascent is followed by a high level traverse of valleys and terraces, where people herd their llamas, that brings us to Pucamarca and lunch. This village is situated at the head of an Inca trail that lead down through a canyon to the royal retreat of Huchuy Q’osco. The approach is guarded at the head of the canyon by an Inca way-station, which was approached by an Inca bridge, and still stands as an example of their remarkable engineering skills. Huchuy Q’osco (3,650 mts) is entered by way of another building designed for the regulation of visitors. The site itself is in a very good state of preservation and it is possible to observe Inca building techniques in great detail as wooden supports have survived the intervening centuries. Here you will see how rocks, which could easily have been removed, are incorporated into open land and building alike. We camp at the site itself and a more tranquil pitch cannot be imagined.
Hike Aprox 6 hours

Day 2: Huchuy Q’osco-Lamay-Cusco
After breakfast you have the opportunity to finish exploring this remarkable site and photograph it under different light conditions. Then we take the Inca Trail down the steep escarpment of the Vilcanota valley to Lamay over 1000mts below. On the way it is possible to see cave tombs in the vertical walls below Huchuy Q’osco. From Lamay ( 2,750 mts) we transfer back to Cusco via Pisac, or if you wish to Ollantaytambo to overnight and from this town next day take the train to Machupicchu.
