  Inca Trail: the Classic Trek

The Inca Trail is the classic trek originating from Cusco, taking in Andean Culture, and archeology. Set in dramatic mountain scenery, it is a mix of mysterious ancient ruins and the majesty of high Andean landscapes. The trail was a royal Inca highway linking Cusco with the religious citadel of Machu Picchu. The city became lost to the jungle to be rediscovered by Hiram Bingham in 1911. Some of the trails have only been rediscovered in the last two decades. Now you can retrace the steps of the ancient Inca to encounter the splendors of Machu Picchu.

All treks into the National Park require advanced booking to ensure the granting of entry permits. In high season (April-October) we advise, that to guarantee places, you make your booking at least three months in advance. These permits and other regulatory controls are a substantial component of the prices for these treks. Such charges are beyond our control and are charged at cost. If you are a private group you may also like to consider some of our variations on the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu. These treks take you to less trampled pastures, are usually a little longer (6 days or more) and represent great value for money.

You will find a large number of various types of organization offering their services for the Classic Inca Trail. We recommended (if you do not already have a recommendation) that you contact past customers for impartial assessments of the company’s performance. You can find details of how to do this for Absolut Travel in what people said about us. As well as private evaluations.

The Prices listed are for private groups of eight persons and are offered as a guide. These include all our regular services and are typical of high season costs.

Four Day Classic Inca Trail: 5 star service. Code AT_IT4D
The four day trek is designed for flexibility to accommodate different levels of physical ability. There are three days of walking, commencing at kilometer 82 in the Urubamba valley, with two high passes; the highest (Warmihuañusca) at 4,200 metres comes on the second day. It is hard work but produces magnificent views. During the four days you will pass through different ecological zones, including cloud forest, high pasture and tree-filled valleys. There are fantastic Inca ruins on route displaying the remarkable affinity with the natural landscape that marks Inca architecture. Much of the trail utilizes Inca stone paths and steps that at one point pass through a tunnel carved by hand. The climax is the guided visit to Machupicchu conducted by our own guide. The fourth day stars early so that you may see the city revealed by the sunrise from the Gate of the Sun (Intipuncu). The enthusiastic hiker may wish to climb the mountain that overlooks the city of Machupicchu for photo opportunities, o just relax in the hot springs at nearby Aqua Calientes from where departs the train that returns you to Cusco.
